3 important take-aways from a year studying the Book of Psalms. God invites us to pray, trust, and love because when we do we will enjoy a closer friendship with Him and with each other.

It’s hard to believe we’re only a few days away from the end of the year.

I don’t know about you, but I feel like 2023 has flown by; it seems like just a moment ago that I invited you to join me in studying the Book of Psalms and experience a “powerful life-changing friendship with God” this year.

And it’s mind-boggling to think about the truth that God wants us to be His friends and to realize how much He wants us to pray, trust, and love Him.

Paul wrote…

Since our friendship with God was restored by the death of His Son while we were still His enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of His Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

Romans 5:10–11

It is only possible for us to be friends with God because of the Father’s sacrificial love in sending His Son, Jesus. And because of Jesus’ sacrificial love demonstrated through His willingness to enter time and to live among us and die for us.

The Life Application Bible Notes introduction to Psalms includes these words…

“This great collection of songs and prayers expresses the heart and soul of humanity. In them, we find the whole range of human experiences expressed. David and the other writers honestly poured out their true feelings, reflecting a dynamic, powerful, and life-changing friendship with God. The psalmists confess their sins, express their doubts and fears, ask God for help in times of trouble, and praise and worship Him.”

All friendship grows through honest communication and because God is gracious, merciful, and loving you and I have been invited to honestly communicate with the Creator of the universe, the Savior of the world, and the Comforter of all mankind.

So, let’s take a look at some of the verses from the Book of Psalms that can help us remember to grow closer to the Lord by being honest with Him in prayer.

Pray…

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Psalm 27:8

I prayed to the Lord, and He answered me.
He freed me from all my fears.
Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy;
no shadow of shame will darken their faces.

Psalm 34:4–5

I took my troubles to the Lord;
I cried out to Him, and He answered my prayer.

Psalm 120:1

Trust…

The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.

Psalm 28:7

For the word of the Lord holds true,
and we can trust everything He does.

Psalm 33:4

Commit everything you do to the Lord.
Trust Him, and He will help you.

Psalm 37:5

Love…

Surely Your goodness and unfailing love
will pursue me all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23:6

The Lord watches over those who fear Him,
those who rely on His unfailing love.

Psalm 33:18

Enter His gates with thanksgiving;
go into His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him and praise His name.
For the Lord is good.
    His unfailing love continues forever,
and His faithfulness continues to each generation.

Psalm 100:4–5

Life is a mixture of wonderful highs and devastating lows. Every day brings us a mingling of emotions. I know … I’m one of those people whose “emotional quotient” is off the charts.

But my emotions and yours don’t surprise God. He knows every detail of our lives but because He loves us so very much, He invites us to come and talk about our needs and emotions with Him. He is God who loves and cares and comforts and helps.

So, let’s take a moment and take Him up on His invitation.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Thanking God for the Psalms
and for His invitation to Pray, Trust, and Love

Father, I thank and praise You for Your Word that tells us that Your love is unfailing and everlasting. It shares that You have always invited Your people to “come and talk” with You in prayer. You want us to KNOW You as we are known by You. You want us to LOVE you as we are loved by You.

Thank You for the Psalmists who have demonstrated Your desire to hear our needs with honest emotions. You welcome our concerns and cries for help as much as You do our praise and joy-filled gratitude.

Thank you for loving me. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for Your Spirit. Thank you for allowing me to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You.

I surrender my life to You and pray that You will give me everything I need to glorify You in everything I say and do. Please give me the wisdom I need to recognize and resist the lies of the enemy and the strength I need to live according to Your plans and purposes for me.

Please help me live my faith boldly so that the world may know that I am Yours and You are mine forever and always. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Rev. Billy Graham wrote…

“Let me assure you that we can be absolutely honest with God. After all, He already knows what’s going on in our minds and hearts—so why shouldn’t we express our true thoughts and feelings to Him? As the Bible says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight” (Hebrews 4:13).”

He knows what we’re feeling and He wants us to know and understand what we’re feeling … then, He wants us to express our feelings openly to Him so that He can help us through whatever is going on in our lives.

Remember … He is always with us. He cares. He is able. He is Lord of all. And He loves perfectly and personally.

So, we will continue to PRAY and we will TRUST. God is who He says He is and He keeps His promises. May we live each day knowing the blessing of sharing His LOVE.
