4 Perfectly Practical Ways to Talk About God and Faith
It happened many years ago, but I can still remember it like it was yesterday.
I was in an intense discussion about God’s characteristics and qualities. As a long-time student of the Bible, I was passionate about the information and faith that inspired my side of the conversation, and that passion led to me proclaim, “my God is…”
I left the discussion confident that I’d been a true defender of God and His character.
Until later…
When I heard God whisper in His quiet tender voice, “Deb, I’m not who you say I am…”
“I am who I say I am.”
It’s amazing how His gentle whisper always knocks the pride right out of me!
I found myself sitting there prayerfully wondering how often I had misrepresented the Great ” I AM” in the past. I wondered if in my finite and limited understanding I had made Him who I wanted Him to be not who He is.
His Word says…
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8–9
Since that day, I continue to be humbly convinced I will never completely understand our Great God this side of heaven.
And that’s okay.
Because it’s that truth that keeps me asking, seeking, and knocking.
My desire, to truly know and love Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, continually inspires me to read and study the His Word, quietly spend time with Him in prayer, and carefully surrender to His Spirit’s wisdom because I need to KNOW God before I talk about God.
He is the One who prompts me to…
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”
Matthew 7:7
Sometimes, our concern over misrepresenting God through our witness can make us timid about sharing our faith.
So, I’d really like to take a couple of minutes to talk about…
4 Perfectly Practical Ways to Talk About God
- Live your faith with kindness and compassion.
- Offer to pray for people and do it.
- Tell your story – tell how knowing, loving, and trusting God has blessed your life.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your conversations.
That’s it!
So, let’s take a look at who God says He is…
4 Verses to Know Who God Says He Is
There is no other God—there never has been, and there never will be. I, yes I, am the Lord, and there is no other Savior.
Isaiah 43:10b–11
“I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?
Jeremiah 32:27
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen Him!”
John 14:6–7
“I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”
Revelation 1:8
And those are just a few of the things God tells us about Himself. The more we get to KNOW Him, the more we will naturally want others to know Him too. We will want them to know the way He has blessed us and how He wants to bless them.
So…
God has given each one of us a story to tell.
Every day of your life and mine has been preparation for this moment in history. God has been with us helping us write a story that is uniquely ours alone!
That’s why I love telling people about my life after fear and how transformational it’s been to surrender my people-pleasing good-girl self to His mercy and grace.
We don’t have to talk about God theologically, we just need to tell them the blessing of knowing Him and show them how very much He loves them.
Let’s pause and pray…
A Prayer Asking for the Spirit’s Help
to Talk about God and Faith
Father, Thank you for giving me the gift of faith. Thank you for the blessing of Your Word of Truth. Thank you for allowing me to see Your loving handprint on my story. You are Lord of all. You are Lord of my life . . . of me.
Lord, I need Your Spirit’s help. I want everyone to know about who You are and the difference You want to make in their lives. I want everyone to experience Your love and forgiveness so that they might the freedom of living with peace, joy, patience, hope, and so much more.
Please forgive me. I have been guilty of believing what people say about You instead of turning to Your Word and knowing what You say. I can be guilty of trying to make You who I want You to be rather than fully placing my hope in who You say You are. I’m so sorry. I want to fully focus my faith in You. I want to know and trust Your Word. I want to see all that You are doing in me and in the world around me.
Please give me everything I need to live with kindness and compassion, open my heart, and help me to actively pray for the people around me, and please help me share my story and tell of the wonderful ways You have worked in my life. Please help me listen to Your guidance and share Your love in ways that glorify You. I ask this in the name of my Savior, Jesus. Amen.
May God bless you today as you think about ways you can talk about God and faith. May He help you think of the people who need to hear your life-changing story and your love for the God who is who He says He is.

Ive been travelling a cancer journey since April. My public display of faith and trust in God has opened windows of opportuinity to share my personal relationship and trust in Him.
Thank you for sharing this, Calvonia! I love that God is using you to touch lives and minister to others as you go through this season. We’re lifting you and praying for healing and asking God to bless you and every life you touch with His love. Hugs!
Amen, Deb! Let’s proclaim who God says He is, not who we think He is.
Blessings!
It is truly a blessing that He wants us to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE Him personally. God bless you!
Sometimes listening to sermons, or your blog, opens up my heart toward the Word with an “ahhhh I never thought of this passage this way….”. One of the greatest teachings is the Book of Joshua. Jericho always had a huge meaning in my life, so did Joshua’s faith and the Lord’s ultimate promise not to leave him nor forsake him, as He always will be by his side. A recent sermon I listened to opened up these old flood gates of my heart – isn’t it amazing that the One and Only, Almighty God, Who could snuff our life out in a blink of an eye is the One begging us to TRUST HIM. Just Trust Him. And if we do then He’s willing to crumble the walls of our heart’s Jericho, care for our food as He did for the hebrews in the wilderness, ensures our water, clothing and leads us into our Promised Land – IF ONLY WE TRUST HIM!
After all, these are always our concerns, the little foxes that spoil the grapes …the concerns of life….the food, the bills, the stuff. They also had a huge hold on me…in fear that I would lack in any of them that I held onto the control over my life through my years. Never could fully trust my Heavenly Father that He actually will meet these needs. It led to disbelief, fear, lots of heartaches, loss of His blessings….but the Miracle is that despite of me, the Lord never turned His back on me – not even when it felt so -, never withdrew His love or mercy. Made sure to walk with me in every difficulty and hardship – even when I brought it on myself. When I was sitting in the wreck, His gentle touch nodged me to get up and move on.
As I said not that long ago to my doubting hubby …when I look back in my life, how could I not love and follow Him, Who loved me and set me aside since my childhood. And while I deserved thousand fold for Him to walk away from me, He lifted me up, dusted me off and guided me along the path.
That’s the God and Jesus I know.
One could credit my strenght, but Who supplies it? One could say it’s tenacity but Where is it coming from? One could say luck but I don’t believe in luck, or councidences.
God gave me many of His promises that are personal and chiseled into my hard heart, so I wouldn’t, couldn’t forget them, neither Who gave them to me.
Thank you so much for sharing this testimony, Gaby. I spent so many years with wasted fear. Your right, when we pause to realize all of the ways He has sustained, protected, and provided for us through life’s highs and lows . . . I believe that’s when faith becomes sight. As Job said, “I’d only heard about You before, but now I’ve seen You with my own eyes.” Job 42:5 Blessings, my friend!
I LOVE that passage Deb ???????????? have a blessed day
