Most people think being humble means not having an inflated opinion of oneself compared to others, but true humility begins as we compare ourselves to God. True humility is loving like Jesus.

On a scale of 1 to 10 – If 1 is proud (completely self-focused) and 10 is humble (completely God and others focused), where would you fall?

Most people think being humble means not having an inflated opinion of themselves compared to others, but true humility isn’t just about comparing ourselves to others.

True humility begins as we compare ourselves to to a perfect, holy God.

Humility is focusing not on ourselves but on our relationship with God and our love for others. In humility, we strive to obey God without worrying about our place on the human status ladder.

When I am honest about my sin in relation to God’s grace, mercy, and love… I can’t help but fall before Him in humility. But what does that mean for our relationships with the people around us?

What does it mean to be humble in our marriages, with our children, our friends, at church, and at work? How do we remain humble in complicated and challenging relationships?

When we focus on God, we can’t help but respond with humility. But when we have to live out humility with people who are annoying, impatient, and competitive, most of us find that more challenging.

Paul wrote…

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

Ephesians 4:2–3

Honestly, that does not happen naturally, and it’s definitely not easy.

It requires help…

It takes the Spirit working in and through us, helping us remember what Jesus said and how He lived.

Let’s take a closer look…

10 Authentic Ways to Be Humble Like Jesus

1. Know, Love, and Trust God

Then [Jesus] said, “Look, I have come to do Your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.

Hebrews 10:9–10

2. Pray and Take Your Burdens to the Lord

Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:28–29

3. Be “Childlike

“I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 18:3–4

4. Live for God’s Glory

[Jesus prayed] “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so He can give glory back to You.”

John 17:1

5. Tell People About God’s Love

Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what He did for me.

Psalm 66:16

6. Be Kind, Tenderhearted, and Forgiving

Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Ephesians 4:32

7. Listen Carefully to the Needs and Concerns of Others

So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of His grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all He has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:7

8. Encourage the People Around You.

Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when He returns, we can live with Him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:10–11

9. Celebrate Other People’s Success without Envy.

Christ gave each one of us the special gift of grace, showing how generous he is. The whole body depends on Christ, and all the parts of the body are joined and held together. Each part does its own work to make the whole body grow and be strong with love.

Ephesians 4:7, 16

10. Help and Serve Others

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45
Most people think being humble means not having an inflated opinion of oneself compared to others, but true humility begins as we compare ourselves to God. True humility is loving like Jesus.

Let’s Pray…

A Prayer to Be Humble Like Jesus

Father God, You gave Your only Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords, to save sinners, like me. He willingly humbled Himself to show us Your love and all You want for us.

He gave up the glories of heaven for 33 years to live among sinners, teach them Your TRUTH, and suffer the punishment they deserved. Jesus showed us the definition of humility.

He humbly set the example for the perfect way to love You and each other. He taught us to be caring and kind, childlike and encouraging, loving and forgiving. He lived how it You want us to serve one another.

Please fill me with Your Spirit and give me all I need to be humble like Jesus. I want to fully KNOW, LOVE, TRUST, and OBEY You. So, I will SEEK YOU with all my heart as I give myself to You. You are Lord of all. You are Lord of my life. Thank you for loving me and making me Your own. Amen.

Most people think being humble means not having an inflated opinion of oneself compared to others, but true humility begins as we compare ourselves to God. True humility is loving like Jesus.

We all live on the humility scale. Even those who strive for humility are constantly aware that pride is always standing at the door.

Oh, and one more thing about true humility… the kind Jesus modeled.

Many think being humble means being spineless or weak. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Jesus showed us…

Humility is strength under control.

Humility is not:

  • Self-degrading.
  • Weak.
  • Cowardice.
  • Powerless.

Humility is:

  • Loving and Serving God
  • Loving and Serving People

Humility is being confident in who we are as children of God, created and redeemed by Him for His plans and purposes.

So live humbly, trust God, and bless your relationships.
