How to Fight Spiritual Battles for the People You Love

12 / 28 / 2012 / 28 / 20
It sometimes feels like the enemy is attacking the people we love more than ever but praise God, He has given us a spiritual battle plan so we can fight back. #spiritualbattle #prayer #God'sWord #BibleStudy #CountingMyBlessings #WWGGG

I recently reread Priscilla Shirer’s book – Fervent.

This time I added a journal . . . taking notes and writing prayers.

I have felt the need to go to battle in my war room more often lately because everywhere I look it seems like the enemy is ramping up his attacks on the people I love.

But rather than getting anxious and discouraged over his efforts to…

  • deceive and distract us with lies and distortions
  • make us doubt and forget who we are in Christ
  • make us selfish and destroy our unity
  • keep us focused on past failures with guilt and shame
  • magnify our problems and make them seem insurmountable
  • taunt and tempt us with our weaknesses
  • keep us overwhelmed and busy with no time to rest
  • keep us from forgiving those who have hurt and betrayed us
  • destroy relationships and break apart families

I want to pray “fervent” prayers and give it all to God . . . asking Him to give us, and the people we love, everything we need to stand with strength and courage and to fight our spiritual battles.

In the prayer Jesus taught, He told us to pray…

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

Matthew 6:13 (NIV and NLT)

You see…

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood [what we can see] but against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places [what we can’t see]. (Personal Paraphrase of Ephesians 6:12)

Jesus knew we would need the Holy Spirit’s help daily to fight the temptation of the evil one. So much so, that the night before His crucifixion, He asked the disciples to…

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

Matthew 26:41 and Mark 14:38

The way to fight the enemy and his temptations is to “stay alert and pray.” (LAB Notes) STAY ALERT by remaining aware of our areas of weakness and wise to satan’s techniques. And PRAY for the Holy Spirit to give us all we need to stand strong on God’s Word of Truth.

We fight spiritual battles through prayer for ourselves and for the people we love.

This has been a really hard year for most of us. And many of us are feeling anxious about the year ahead. What will it mean for our nation, our communities, our churches, our families? But rather than giving in to worry . . . it’s time to fight back. It’s time to stay alert and pray!

Because my friend, remember this is just a battle . . . Jesus has already won the victory. What ultimately lies ahead for His followers is glorious!

I know, sometimes the battle feels overwhelming but God has given us everything we need to fight spiritual battles both for ourselves and for the people we love.

Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Ephesians 5:10–11, 18

Are you ready? Let’s Pray!

Fight Spiritual Battles
for the People You Love

I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is.

Ephesians 3:16–18

Father, I pray that you will pour out your strength on __________. I love that Your Word says You have glorious, unlimited resources of strength to give Your children. It’s so easy for us to focus on the world’s problems to feel like the enemy is at times—winning. But Your Word says, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are greater than those who are with them.” (2 Kings 6:16)

I pray that Jesus will make His home in __________’s heart. May __________ trust You completely. May Your love keep him (her) strong and to KNOW that Your love is wider, longer, higher, and deeper than anyone can fully grasp or imagine. By Your grace, please give __________ all that is needed to live full of faith and hope he (she) might be filled overflowing with Your love.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5–6

Father, I pray __________ will SEEK You above all else. Please make the desire of her (his) heart a longing to know Your will. Please guide and direct her (him), showing her (him) the path You want her (him) to take. And by Your grace, please help __________ to KNOW with confidence that she (he) can trust You and depend on You to bless her (him) with all that is needed moment by moment.

Your ways are perfect! Please place a hedge of protection around __________ and keep her (him) safe and strong as she (he) faces any or all temptations and attacks from the enemy. Bless her (him) and fill her (him) with faith and Your perfect love.

[Jesus prayed] Holy Father, You have given me Your name; now protect them by the power of Your name so that they will be united just as we are.

I’m not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.

Make them holy by Your truth; teach them Your word, which is truth.

John 17:11, 15, 17

Father, I love this prayer Jesus lifted to You for His disciples of all generations. It’s so easy for us to focus on the world and its temporary problems but Jesus prayed about eternal things that last. He prayed about the things that are most important. So, Father, I am joining Jesus and praying for ________, asking You to protect him (her), to give him (her) all that is needed to be united to Your family and theirs.

Please keep him (her) safe from the evil one. Give him (her) a hunger and thirst for Your Word and teach him (her) the TRUTH by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Your Word points out our sin, moves this to repent, assures us of Your love and forgiveness, renews our relationship to You through Jesus, and helps us trust and obey You in the future. (LAB notes) With all my heart, I pray _________ will live those truths with the help and power of Your Spirit. And I pray that will all be true in my life as well.

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

John 16:31

Lord, I know trials and sorrows are inevitable because we live in a world plagued by sin but I pray for __________ that she (he) might live each surrounded by Your peace that goes beyond all understanding. (Philippians 4:7) Please help her (him) remember that You are always with her (him) and that You have overcome the world. The enemy has been defeated and our future is secure in You.

Although, he attacks Your followers with trials and temptations . . . You, Lord, are with us and promise that when our hearts and mind are focused on You we will have all we need to have victory over his tactics. So, I pray that __________ will come to You that You might give her (him) patience and peace.

‘May the Lord bless you
    and protect you.
May the Lord smile on you
    and be gracious to you.
May the Lord show you His favor
    and give you His peace.’

Numbers 6:24–26

Father, I pray this blessing will cover ________.

I ask that You will protect __________.
Please smile on and be gracious,
merciful, and compassionate toward. __________.
May You show __________ Your favor
and grant __________ Your perfect peace.

Father, Your Word is full of hope and I pray that this hope will fill __________.
Please surround him (her) with love and encouragement and give everything needed that they might live each day for Your glory.
In Jesus holy name, I pray. Amen.

I am so thankful God has given us all we need to fight our spiritual battles.

He’s given us a battle plan and the tools we need in His Word and He has given us His Spirit to guide and help us fight. May you and I boldly and faithfully fight for our loved ones. And may we most of all praise God for Jesus who fought and won the victory for our souls.

God bless you!

Verses to Pray When You Need Help to Love God More

5 / 15 / 205 / 15 / 20
Even when you and I want to love God more by showing Him our love perfectly 100% of the time, we can't. But He loves us so much we can pray & ask Him to help. #Prayer #LoveGod #BibleStudy #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

Do you ever feel frustrated with yourself when you read…

Jesus said, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.”

Mark 12:29–30

I don’t know about you, but I fall so far short of the “all” part.

All my heart, all my soul, all my mind, and all my strength … that’s 100% intentional love and focus 24/7. That’s ALWAYS!

And that’s where I fall short. It’s what I want! I want to obey Him. I want to show Him how much I love Him by trusting and obeying His will consistently but like Paul, I miss that mark way too often.

I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.

Romans 7:18–19

And even when what I do is right, I’m often guilty of doing it with the wrong motives. And I know the loving Him with my “all” falls short!

I’m not telling you this so we can both sit around and wallow in the guilt of our failures. I don’t believe that’s what God wants for us. I believe this realization is supposed to do two things in us.

  1. Send us running to Jesus.

Look what Paul said next…

Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 7:24b–25a

And 2. Ask God for the Holy Spirit to help us change.

Jesus promised…

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.”

John 14:15–16

Isn’t that awesome!

When you and I recognize our sins and run to Jesus in repentance … He not only forgives us but He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us in the future.

And although we will never trust and obey Him perfectly this side of heaven … He will never stop forgiving us and giving us what we need through His Spirit.

And that’s why we don’t have to wallow in guilt … Jesus carried it all to the cross. You and I can surrender it all to Him and rejoice because…

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

So, I’m praying today and asking God to:

  1. Help me quickly run to Jesus each time I fail.
  2. Fill me with the Spirit, my Helper, that I might more faithfully love Him with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Verses to Pray When You Need Help to Love God More

Even when you and I want to love God more by showing Him our love perfectly 100% of the time, we can't. But He loves us so much we can pray & ask Him to help. #Prayer #LoveGod #BibleStudy #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

Those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love Him. That is how we know we are living in Him.

1 John 2:5

Oh, Father, this is a hard word. It’s easy to say we trust You for salvation but harder to live in obedience. And it’s impossible to perfectly obey because I don’t perfectly love.

The 10 Commandments can be summed up in … loving You and loving others. Jesus said that to love is the “Greatest Commandment.” And I know I don’t love perfectly. I don’t show You my love through obedience and I don’t show others my love … I can so easily become selfish and prideful. I’m sorry. Please forgive me and help me. I want to love You with every part of me all the time. I want to love like Jesus.

“Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

“In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.”

Luke 7:48, Luke 15:10

Father, Thank you! You are faithful to forgive. Always!

And what a wonderful word! The angels rejoice when I repent! You forgive me and the angels rejoice. It simply doesn’t get any better than that! There are no words to fully express my gratitude. And this is why my heart’s desire is to trust and obey You faithfully. Please help me!

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever … for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

John 14:15–16, 17b

Father, I do love you and I want to keep your commands. I want to love you with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and I want to love people like Jesus loved them. It makes me sad when I realize how far short I fall of my own goal … I know I’m not even close to Yours.

So, I run to You. I lay my failures at the foot of the cross and ask that You will forgive me through Jesus. I’m so sorry! And Lord, I want to do better in the future. Will you please fill me with Your Spirit and give me all I need to love, trust, and obey as You want. Help me keep my heart and mind focused on You and trust that if You ask anything of me … You will give me everything I need to obey You in love.

I’ll give you a new heart, put a new spirit in you. I’ll remove the stone heart from your body and replace it with a heart that’s God-willed, not self-willed. I’ll put my Spirit in you and make it possible for you to do what I tell you and live by my commands.

Ezekiel 36:26–27

Father, what an amazing promise! You take my stubborn prideful selfish heart of stone and replace it with a heart that loves You and wants to live by Your commands.

I am so well aware that I can’t love and obey You well in my own strength. But with Your Sprit’s help … everything changes. You give me everything I need to live in Your love each day. Help me faithfully SEEK to KNOW Your TRUTH. Help me walk in Your love. Help me love You and show Your love to others in ways that will give You glory.

The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

Romans 8:26–27

This promise gives me hope, Father! Thank you!

Thank you for your Spirit who not only guides and directs me according to Your will but He goes to You on my behalf and tells You my needs. Your Spirit knows my every need and the intentions of my heart. Good and yes, even the not so good. And He pleads for me … telling You what I need to grow closer to You. He knows exactly what I need to be able to love You with all my heart and soul, my mind and my strength.

There really are no appropriate words to fully express my gratitude. Thank you for hearing my prayers. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for Your Holy Spirit to help me. Thank you for Your grace and mercy to help me focus my heart and mind on You. Thank you for helping me love You more and more each day. You are my greatest blessings! Thanks and praise now and forever. Amen.

Even when you and I want to love God more by showing Him our love perfectly 100% of the time, we can't. But He loves us so much we can pray & ask Him to help. #Prayer #LoveGod #BibleStudy #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings
We need help to love God more.

And when you and I reach that place where we recognize that we want to love God more we typically also come to the realization that we can’t do it on our own. The Good News is we don’t have to.

Our past is forgiven through Jesus. And our future is blessed through the gift of His Spirit to help us.

So, stop today and give it all to the Lord in prayer … all your faults and failures, humbling admitting that you aren’t capable of loving perfectly on your own. Then rest in the truth that when you want to love God more … He is perfectly able to give you everything you need.

May you be blessed today by His grace as you live for His glory!

Thank you so much for joining me today.

When You Want Stronger Faith – Pray Jesus’ Truth

3 / 27 / 203 / 26 / 20
It's easy to relate to the father who said, Lord, "I believe, help me overcome my unbelief." When we want stronger faith, we need to pray Jesus' truth and ask for His help. #Faith #Jesus #PrayScripture #Hope #Prayer #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

What do you do when life is uncertain and you are struggling with feelings of vulnerability?

It’s interesting to be living at a time of collective uncertainty.

But the truth is … everyone experiences that vulnerable feeling from time to time.

I can’t tell you how often I’ve thought about the words spoken by the father of the “demon-possessed” boy … a desperate man who just wanted his son to be healed.

Talk about feeling vulnerable.

This father brought his desperation to the disciples but they couldn’t help. So, as Jesus came down from the Mountain of Transfiguration He was met with a group of arguers trying to figure out what to do next.

Jesus surveyed the crowd and asked a few questions, and after answering a few details about his son, the father pleads…

“Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”

Mark 9:22

Jesus replied…

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’? Anything is possible if a person believes.”

Mark 9:23

The father’s response always grabs my attention and my heart…

“I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

Mark 9:24

Can you relate to these words, too? When you are desperate for answers and solutions? When life feels shaky?

But that’s the point. The father didn’t take his son and leave. He didn’t give up in despair. He took the faith he had and trusted Jesus.

So, that’s what I’m doing today. I’m going to Jesus and asking Him for His mercy and help. I’m honestly admitting that I feel vulnerable.

I’m praying the words of Jesus, asking Him to give me peace and hope because when I feel vulnerable, I need stronger faith. Faith that truly believes the promise that … “Anything is possible if a person believes.”

I’d love for you to pray with me…

When You Want Stronger Faith – Pray Jesus’ Truth

It's easy to relate to the father who said, Lord, "I believe, help me overcome my unbelief." When we want stronger faith, we need to pray Jesus' truth and ask for His help. #Faith #Jesus #PrayScripture #Hope #Prayer #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

“I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

Mark 9

Lord, thank you for the gift of faith. I can’t imagine trying to do even a moment of my life without the hope You give.

It’s why I love this father’s hopeful prayer. Like him…

I do believe, but when I’m overwhelmed by problems and everywhere I turn people are fearful and worried … doubt creeps in and challenges me. I need Your help, Lord. Please fill me with Your Spirit, help me remember the countless ways You have been with me in the past, and flood my heart and mind with the truths of Your unfailing promises.

Jesus said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.

Matthew 7:24–25

Lord Jesus, I want to be wise. I want to listen to and follow Your teaching. I want “solid rock” faith. Your Word tells me to “be still and know” You. (Psalm 46:10) Please fill me with a desire to spend time with You by reading and studying Your Word … by sitting with You in prayer. Please quiet my spirit and help me fix my thoughts on Your truth.

Help me “keep my eyes on” You, the author and perfecter of my faith. (Hebrews 12:2) Help me fix my “thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. And think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8) With Your Spirit’s help, I believe those things will help me through life’s storms.

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.

John 14:15–17a

Lord, I do love You … yet, I know I fall short of perfectly obeying your commandments. Please forgive me. I’ve prayed to know Your truth. I’ve asked You to help me love You with all that I am. I’ve called out for Your help to be able to trust and obey Your perfect will.

Because I know that I am unable to do any of those things on my own. I need Your Spirit’s help. I surrender myself to You, Lord. Guide me. Fill me. Teach me Your truth. Keep me so focused on You that the world’s lies and temptations have no power over me.

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31–32

Lord, You are the TRUTH that sets me free.

By Your grace, I am no longer a slave to sin and I am free from the eternal consequences of my sin.

You free me from the lies I tell myself and the lies satan uses to tempt me. You make me free to live each day with hope and joy because I am forgiven and redeemed for all eternity. You give me freedom to love as I have been loved.

Lord Jesus, I don’t want to just know Your truth … I want to live Your truth. Please help me follow where You lead. Help me faithfully obey You … without doubts or questions but trusting that every Word is true. May I say like the Psalmist: “Every word of God holds true and we can trust everything He does.” (Psalm 33:4)  Amen.

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20

Lord, I pray that You will help me be an encourager. I want everyone to know and love You. I want them to live with the freedom You give. I want them to know the blessings of loving You and obeying Your commands. I want them to experience peace, joy, patience, and hope. And most of all, I want them to enjoy the blessing of Your presence … to rest in the truth that no matter what happens in this life, they will never have to face it alone. You will be with them.

Your grace is sufficient. When I am weak, You give me the strength I need. (2 Corinthians 12:9) You guide by Your truth and help my faith to grow. Thank you! I worship and praise You and ask that by Your grace, I might live for Your glory today, tomorrow, and always. Amen.

You know, I’ve learned something important in recent months…

I’ve learned I have to be careful about what I consume—what I listen to, watch, and read. I have to think carefully about the discussions I have.

If I want to have stronger faith and know and pray Jesus’ truths … I have to focus on who He is and all He’s done.

You have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:1–2

When I feel vulnerable and my heart cries…

“I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

The promise I have … the promise you have, is that we are not on our own when we want to have stronger faith.

When you and I want to have a rock-solid foundation built on the truths of Jesus. We have the promise that we have been hidden with Christ in God. We have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us know and…

Pray Jesus’ truth.

And that’s awesome news!

Because of Jesus, you and I can surrender each day, even when that day feels vulnerable and uncertain. We can be confident that we will be given everything we need to live in faith with hope and joy.

Powerful Verses You Need to Pray Over Your Spouse

3 / 13 / 203 / 13 / 20
Praying Scripture is powerful and positive. These 5 powerful verses to pray over your spouse ask God to do what only He can do to give them all they need. #PrayforHusband #PrayforWife #PrayScripture #Hope #Faith #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

I’m a good student … someone who has always believed that information helps me achieve my goals and helps my relationships.

So, whenever we faced a challenge in our marriage or family, I went searching for information that would “fix” the problem.

I’ve read countless self-help books … books on personality types and love languages in addition to marriage and parenting guides because I wanted to gather as much information as possible to better understand the people in my life and strengthen our connections.

Although I probably gained some helpful insights, in retrospect, I wish I had spent more time and energy turning to a better source.

I wish I’d spent more time searching the Scripture and on my knees in intentional prayer.

If you’re a regular visitor here at CMB, you know I’ve learned to love praying Scripture. One of the reasons is that it helps me focus on praying what God wants more than what I want or think I need.

In the past, I spent years asking God to…

  • change a loved one’s attitude.
  • fix a problem.
  • alter their behavior.
  • transform their thoughts.

And what I’ve learned is that I was praying from a negative they “need to change” perspective.

Praying Scripture has taught me to pray from a positive perspective. One that looks to the future and prays for my spouse to have what God has already said He wants for them. It stops looking at what isn’t and prays for what should be.

To put it bluntly … it’s praying according to God’s will not mine! And that’s just better for my heart and my attitudes.

So today, I’m writing prayers for Rev but I’m leaving a blank for His name so you can join me and pray over your spouse as well.

Powerful Verses You Need to Pray Over Your Spouse

Praying Scripture is powerful and positive. These 5 powerful verses to pray over your spouse ask God to do what only He can do to give them all they need. #PrayforHusband #PrayforWife #PrayScripture #Faith #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

John 14:27

Lord, the problems of this world can feel overwhelming at times. The news can be terrifying and sometimes seems like there are countless reasons to be anxious and afraid. But You are on the throne. You reign today as You have since before the beginning of time and You will reign for all eternity.

Thank you for this awesome promise! You have won the victory over sin, death, and power of the enemy. You have already defeated the powers that try to upset our minds and unsettle our hearts.

Lord, I ask you to pour Your Spirit over __________ and give him Your perfect peace. Help him release troubling thoughts to You as He focuses on Your Truth.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Father, please give __________ everything he needs when he feels discouraged. By Your grace, You give us everything we need to live without fear and despair.

You have promised to be with us. You have made it possible for us to have a relationship with You, the God of the universe. You assure us that You are strong enough to meet every need. You are our help and our encouragement. Be with __________. Strengthen and encourage him as You remind him of all he has as Your chosen child.

Let all who take refuge in You rejoice;
let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread Your protection over them, that all who love Your name may be filled with joy.
For You bless the godly, O Lord;
You surround them with Your shield of love.

Psalm 5:11–12

Lord, protect __________ physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Please surround him with a covering of Your loving care. Give him a sense of Your presence and the knowledge that You are always with him through each experience and every challenge.

May he remember that he can always come to You with every need. He tries so hard to be strong for everyone in our family. Please remind him that You want to be his strength and place of safety.

Lord, I pray that __________ will always love You with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. Fill him with spirit-filled joy and an attitude of praise for who You are and all You’ve done.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5–6

Father, I pray for __________ will trust You with all his heart … that he will fully depend on the truth of Your Word and seek Your will in all he does. You invite us to ask You to give us the wisdom we need. Please help __________ know that he doesn’t have to be strong on his own. He doesn’t need to figure things out or prepare for the future alone. You promise to lead the way when we trust Your promises, obey Your commands, and seek Your will.

May we both follow You as we live each day by Your grace and for Your glory.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romanns 15:13

Lord, I ask that You will be __________’s source of hope … that he will trust the power of Your love completely.

You invite us to place our trust in You. (John 14:1) And You promise that as we do, we can bring You our burdens and You will help us carry them. (Matthew 11:28)

Thank you for Your Spirit who lives with and within us giving us everything we need to surrender our lives to You in faith. On our own, we can’t but with You, everything is possible (Matthew 19:26) A promise that is a hope that gives peace and joy.

Please give __________ the confidence that You are who You say You are and that You can and will do all that You have promised.

Your grace is sufficient, Lord. Thanks and praise now and forever. Amen.

Pray Over Your Spouse

With God’s help, I’ve learned something very important … praying positively for my husband and family gives me peace.

All of those years I busily tried to learn ways to “fix” whatever I thought was going poorly. With God’s help, I’m doing my best to remember to surrender my loves to the Lord … to pray Scripture over them and trust that God is able.

Friends, there is peace and hope when you pray over your spouse and entrust them to the Holy Spirit to do the work He is far more equipped than either you or I.

So, love big, trust the Lord and pray. As Rev might say, “that’s downright Biblical!”

Psalms that will Help When You Need to Pray

3 / 2 / 203 / 1 / 20
When you need to pray but emotions overwhelm you - it's helpful to pray the words of Scripture. That's why I love praying the honest emotions in Psalms. #Prayer #EmotionalHealth #Psalms #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

If you watch the news … the world is a mess and it’s only getting worse.

Maybe you are doing okay personally or maybe you’re not. But even when you and I are fed, housed, and healthy … we always seem to have concerns to lay before the Lord in prayer. Some big, some small, and some that feel overwhelming.

I remember a morning when Rev had already gone to work when I called him upset saying, “I need you to come and pray with me! I need to pray and I just can’t find the words.”

Have you ever found yourself in a similar place?

When your need has overwhelmed your emotions and the only prayer you can raise is … “Lord, please help!”?

I think that’s why I love praying Scripture. It soothes my heart and settles my mind to know God’s children have gone there before me. My emotions aren’t new or unusual … people have been experiencing feelings just like mine forever.

So, when my emotions have cluttered my mind and I need help finding the words to pray, I now turn to Scripture. My favorite prayers are in the Book of Psalms because David and the other Psalmists were open and honest in expressing their feelings and frustrations.

I made a list of verses and prayers from the Book of Psalms to help me pray when my emotions overwhelm me.

When You Feel Afraid

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
so why should I be afraid?

My heart has heard You say,
“Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Psalm 27:1, 8

Father, thank you for inviting me to come to You whenever I feel afraid. You tell me to honestly share my feelings with You trusting Your unfailing love to calm my heart and give me peace.

Psalm 23

He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
    bringing honor to His name.
Even when I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for You are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
    protect and comfort me.

Psalm 23:3–4

Lord, whatever path You allow me to walk, I pray that You will give me everything I need to obey You and give You glory. I will not be afraid because I trust You to protect and comfort my heart, mind, and soul.

Psalm 56

When I am afraid,
I will put my trust in you.
I praise God for what He has promised.
I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
What can mere mortals do to me?

Psalm 56:3–4

Father God, You have always been faithful to keep Your promises. I trust You to give me everything I need today, tomorrow, and always.

When You are Confused and Overwhelmed

Psalm 73

I belong to You;
    You hold my right hand.
You guide me with Your counsel,
leading me to a glorious destiny.
Whom have I in heaven but You?
I desire You more than anything on earth.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
    but God remains the strength of my heart;
    He is mine forever.

Psalm 73:23–26

What an amazing promise … I belong to You, Father. You hold me, guide me, and protect my soul. I love You with all my heart. Even when I don’t understand what You are doing … You are with me holding me close, giving me strength and guiding my steps.

Psalm 34

The Lord hears His people
when they call to Him for help.
He rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

Psalm 34:17–18

Father, thank you for hearing the cries of my heart. Thank you for helping me, holding me, forgiving me, and saving me. Your grace is sufficient for every circumstance. By Your grace, please help me focus my heart and mind on You … the One who is greater than my problems and my pain.

Psalm 143

Let me hear of Your unfailing love each morning,
    for I am trusting You.
Show me where to walk,
for I give myself to You.

Psalm 143:8

Lord, Your Word tells me again and again of Your unfailing love. In a world where love so often seems self-absorbed and self-serving, Your perfect love never disappoints me. I surrender every day of my life to You. I love You. Please help me live for the glory of Your name.

When You Feel Small and Unimportant

Psalm 139

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
    They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
    You are still with me!

Psalm 139:17–18

Father, You know me and love me. You tell me I am precious to You. You know my thoughts and care about my struggles. Wherever I am and whatever I do … You are with me. I love You and worship You now and forever.

Psalm 42

Each day the Lord pours
His unfailing love upon me,
and through each night I sing His songs,
praying to God who gives me life.

Psalm 42:8

Father, Your unfailing love surrounds me. In the middle of the night when I feel small and my worries feel huge help me focus on Your sovereign power, wisdom, mercy, and grace.

When You Feel Exhausted and Worn Out

Psalm 77

I cry out to God;
I call to God, and He will hear me.
I look for the Lord on the day of trouble.
All night long I reach out my hands,
    but I cannot be comforted.

Psalm 77:1–2

Father, It’s been a long hard day. I feel like a toddler who is so close to pitching an exhausted tantrum. I need You to hold me. Please give me the strength I need today, the peace I need to rest, and the courage to do it all again tomorrow.

Psalm 62

I find rest in God;
    only He can save me.
He is my rock and my salvation.
    He is my defender;
    I will not be defeated.

Psalm 62:1–2 (NCV)

I will not be defeated today, Father. You are my Rock. You give me the courage and strength I need. With Your help … I can do this!

Know the Lord Hears Your Prayers

Psalm 6

The Lord has heard my plea;
the Lord will answer my prayer.

Psalm 6:9

I cling to Your promises, Lord. You hear and answer those who cry out to You for help. Thank you! Your love is greater than life!

Psalm 143

Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my plea.
Answer me because
You are faithful and righteous.

Psalm 143:1

Father, You hear my prayer … not because of who I am or what I’ve done but because of who You are. You are:

  • loving.
  • compassionate.
  • holy.
  • infinite.
  • unchanging.
  • all-knowing.
  • all-powerful.
  • wise.
  • just.
  • merciful.
  • gracious.
  • and altogether perfect in every way.

Thanks and praise!

Psalm 28

Praise the Lord!
For He has heard my cry for mercy.
The Lord is my strength and shield.
I trust Him with all my heart.
He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.
I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.

Psalm 28:6–7

Oh, Father, I thank you!

Thank you for Your Word that tells us of real people with real emotions … people we can relate to as we see our own flaws and weaknesses, struggles and needs. Thank you for encouraging us to come to You honestly with feelings that are already known to You. And thank you most of all for giving us everything we need through Jesus and the power of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus precious name, we pray. Amen.

When you need to pray but emotions overwhelm you - it's helpful to pray the words of Scripture. That's why I love praying the honest emotions in Psalms. #Prayer #EmotionalHealth #Psalms #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

Friend, I want you to know something important.

I have loved God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – for as long as I can remember. But 15 years ago, I fell in love with His Word as the Lord used it to fill me with hope and peace.

The Spirit showed me that even when life is confusing and I don’t understand God’s plan, I can always trust His love.

As I read the accounts of people, places, and events, I can relate. I can see myself…

  • taking a bite of the apple in the Garden.
  • depressed like Sarah.
  • grumbling like the wilderness wanderers.
  • broken like Job.
  • running like Jonah.
  • hiding and afraid like the disciples.

I’d love to see myself in the heroes of faith … but I identify more with the broken and needy. Because in their accounts, I see God’s constant and unwavering love.

And because He loved them, I trust His love for me.

When I read the Bible, I don’t see a bunch of stories or a list of rules; I see the greatest love letter that has ever been written.

I’m reading through my favorite books, John and Romans, during the season of Lent and I’d love for you to join me. It’s not too late! We just started a few days ago. You can download the schedule here.

I’m asking God to bless you today as you go to His Word and turn to Him in prayer with honest feelings in faith … trusting His perfect unfailing love.

Thank you so much for joining me today.

How to Pray Scripture Over the People You Love

2 / 14 / 202 / 14 / 20
The perfect way to pray Scripture for someone you love, especially when you don't have the words you need to lift them up to the God of grace, mercy, & love. #PrayScripture #PrayforHusband #PrayforChildren #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings #PowerfulPrayers #PraytheBible

Let everything you do be done in love… 1 Corinthians 16:14

It’s hard to do everything in love, isn’t it?

Today is the day we focus on love … romantic love, family love, and friend love.

  • Eros — Romanic Love.
  • Storge — Familial Love.
  • Philia — Affectionate (Friend) Love.

But that’s not the love Paul was talking about in his letter to the Corinthians. The word he used is ἀγάπῃ.

  • Agape — Unconditional Love.

Agape love is unconcerned with the self and concerned with the greatest good of another. Agape isn’t born just out of emotions, feelings, familiarity, or attraction, but from the will and as a choice. Agape requires faithfulness, commitment, and sacrifice without expecting anything in return.

Christianity.com

Based on that definition … is it any wonder that agape love is hard?!

Jesus told His followers to…

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.

Mark 12:30–31 (edited)

And…

Love as I have loved you.

John 13:34

Jesus loved with perfect knowledge and wisdom and no matter how much I want that … my imperfect self falls short. But there is something Jesus did with agape love that you and I can always know is right and the perfect thing to do in any situation and for every relationship.

One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is John 17. It’s a beautiful example of Jesus praying for those He loves … His disciples, His followers, you and me.

And we can pray, too! We can take our people to the One who always knows what they need … to the One who loves them perfectly.

Today, I’m taking the people I love to the Lord in prayer and I’d love for you to join me as I pray Scripture for those you love.

A Prayer for the People You Love

Father, please fill the people I love with the love of Christ Jesus. My heart’s desire is for them to seek You and to know and love You with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Please give them everything they need each day to live in peace and give them the courage and strength needed to live for Your glory. In Jesus name. Amen.

One more thing…

I’ve often said, that the one thing I wish I’d done more of when our children were growing up is … pray for them.

I read countless parenting books as I worried of this stage and that change and sure I shot up countless prayers for the Lord to guide and direct me to be the best mom I could be … but oh, how I wish I had prayed more specifically for my family’s needs.

I sometimes think it’s because I didn’t know how to put my prayers into words. Sure I prayed, “please help, please guide, please bless” often but too often I was so overwhelmed with the emotion of the moment that I struggled to focus and pour our needs out the way I truly wanted.

That’s why I love praying Scripture. God gives us the words to pray for our loved ones.

How cool is that?!

He loves us and the people we love so much that He not only wants and welcomes our prayers but He gives us the words to pray as well.

And if we miss something, He says…

The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

Romans 8:26

That is overwhelming love.

Love that is perfect, unconditional, and unfailing.

And on a day when we are focused on love – that is Good News!

So pray for the people you love and trust God’s perfect, unconditional, and unfailing love.

Before you go … share a verse you turn to when you want to pray Scripture for someone you love.

Thank you so much for joining me today.

When You Need to See Things in a Different Way

1 / 30 / 201 / 30 / 20
When I question my perspective and need to see things in a different way - I turn to the Bible and prayer asking God to show me His way to look at my life. #WWGGG #Prayer #BibleStudy #CountingMyBlessings #NewPerspective

I’m not a thrill-seeker.

Nope! I’m not looking for life’s next roller-coaster ride or white water rapids experience.

Now some of you may be thinking … I totally get it. I completely agree.

But others are shaking their heads thinking … that’s so boring. I can’t wait for my next adrenaline rush.

And I love it! I love the way God wires us all differently.

Although, I have to admit that in the middle of an opinionated conversation, I often struggle with the way God makes us all differently.

It’s interesting when we’re talking about personal tastes, abilities, and preferences. It’s quite another when we’re trying to understand how someone can come to a point of view that is completely contrary to our own.

The thing is, we don’t come to our views of the world simply through God’s creative wiring. We also spend years developing a perspective lens and that lens influences how we look at everything.

Every person ever created is a mixture of God’s making and their experiences, relationships, environment, and education. A perspective developed over many years.

But there’s a problem with exclusively depending on those things as the basis for our ideas and opinions. We live in a sinful world and our experiences, relationships, environment, and education are always less than perfect.

So, no one grows up in circumstances that can lead them to have a perfect perspective.

I’ll admit it’s hard to accept the possibility that my perspective might be wrong. And it’s even harder for me to deal with people who are adamant that their perspective is always right.

But I’ve decided it’s time to quit thinking about people’s opinions and perspectives. It’s time to look at things in a different way.

Because if I really care about the truth and not just about being right … then I need to know God’s perspective.

So, I’m going to God’s Word and prayer. I’m asking God to help me see things in a different way … in His way.

I’m asking God to give me His perspective.

If you’re willing to pause and pray. If you’re ready to admit you’re perspective may not be perfect and see things a different way. If you’re ready to ask God to show you His perspective … will you pray with me?

When You Need to See Things in a Different Way

When I question my perspective and need to see things in a different way - I turn to the Bible and prayer asking God to show me His way to look at my life. #WWGGG #Prayer #BibleStudy #CountingMyBlessings #NewPerspective

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.

2 Corinthians 10:3–4

Father, help me remember that the enemy is always at work around me. He is the Father of Lies (John 8:44) who is at work trying to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) what we have in and through Jesus. He is at work trying to break our relationships and distort our perspectives.

As I study Your Word, help me see things in a different way. Fill my heart and mind with Your perspective and help me fight his lies with Your truth.

Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.

1 Corinthians 3:18–19

Father, the world keeps shouting that its way is better. There is really nothing new. Solomon wrote, “History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

As I read your Word, it reveals the foolishness of the world. From Genesis through Revelation, You teach us about the foolishness of following the world’s ways.

Please help me. I want to see things in a different way. I want to follow Jesus. I want to trust and obey You. Please give me peace with being considered foolish to those shouting the world’s “wisdom” and stand on the firm foundation of Your unfailing love.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:2

Father, give me a hunger and thirst for Your Word. I want to set my heart on Your truth. Please transform me into the person You want me to be. Teach me that I might know Your will. Help me become someone who willingly and faithfully lives to fulfill Your plans and purposes.

I surrender this day to You. Please give me the strength to stand firm when I’m tempted to go along with the crowd. Help me to see things in a different way … Your way! That I might live for Your glory and shine the light of Your love.

Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.

Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.

Colossians 3:2–3,10

Father, I need Your help. It is said, that You whisper while the world is loud.

It’s true. The noise never stops and much of it is not in line with Your will for me. Father, please help me listen for Your voice. Please give me an eternal perspective … one that looks beyond my circumstances to You and all You have done for me. Help me put Your Kingdom’s priorities into daily practice.

Help me remember that by Your grace my life is safe in Jesus … my salvation is secure. And help me live each day overwhelmed with gratitude for all You have done and continue to do to make me Your own.

So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

2 Corinthians 4:18

Oh Father, Please help me see things in a different way. Help me remember You have angel warriors with me helping me fight my battles. (Luke 4:10) Please prepare for each spiritual battle by equipping me with Your promised armor.

Guard me with Your truth. Grow my faith. Give me Your peace. Fill my heart with Your love and my mind with Your Word.

Help me remember that this life is temporary but that all I have in You lasts forever. Your love gives me a new perspective. Jesus has given me a new way to live. A way that will bless me today, tomorrow, and forever. By Your grace and for Your glory in Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

When I question my perspective and need to see things in a different way - I turn to the Bible and prayer asking God to show me His way to look at my life. #WWGGG #Prayer #BibleStudy #CountingMyBlessings #NewPerspective

Friend, it’s not easy to see things in a different way.

The world shouts at us and tells us that believing and trusting the words of the Bible is narrow-minded and biased. It wants us to doubt and question looking at life through anything other than our gut-feelings and personal preferences is foolish.

St. Augustine said…

“Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.”

So, no matter what “everyone” says or does … I’m asking God to help me see things in a different way.

And I’m praying for you, as well…

I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.

Ephsians 1:16b–17

May God bless you with His truth, peace, hope, and wisdom. And may He fill You with His unfailing love that lasts forever.

5 Prayers that will Bless Your Thanksgiving

11 / 21 / 197 / 28 / 20
5 verses to pray and bless your Thanksgiving celebration with your family and friends. Gratitude is good for you & is an important part of giving God glory! #Thanksgiving #Prayer #Holidays #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

I’m jumping into the holidays this weekend … prepping the kitchen for Thanksgiving and decorating for Christmas.

I know I may be breaking some kind of unwritten code by putting up my Christmas tree before Thanksgiving but the gratitude holiday is so late this year, I just can’t wait any longer.

Even with all planning, preparing, and doing … all the anticipation of the food and festivities, I don’t want to lose track of the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving.

It’s so easy for us to get so focused on the food and the fellowship, we forget the why of the celebration.

The Story Behind Thanksgiving

In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days.

In 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

In 1863, at the height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November

History.com

But why?

Why is giving thanks important?

And maybe the more important question is…

Who is it we are supposed to be thanking?

Because generalized gratitude that simply goes out into the atmosphere seems rather pointless.

The Psalmist wrote…

Acknowledge that the Lord is God!
He made us, and we are His.

Psalm 100:3

You and I are created by God. We belong to Him … made for His glory. And gratitude is an important part of giving God glory!

Today, I’m sharing verses to pray with your family this Thanksgiving. I pray they bless you…

5 Prayers that will Bless Your Thanksgiving

5 verses to pray and bless your Thanksgiving celebration with your family and friends. Gratitude is good for you & is an important part of giving God glory! #Thanksgiving #Prayer #Holidays #WWGGG #CountingMyBlessings

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.

Psalm 107:1

Father, simply saying thank you seems like it falls short of the gratitude I want to offer You. You have graciously poured countless blessings into my life over the past year. And You have mercifully protected me in ways I’ve seen and I’m sure in immeasurable ways I haven’t. You have given me hope and courage when I’ve needed it most. Your love covers every area of my life! Thank you!

Thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57

Father, Your greatest gift is forgiveness through Jesus. Through Him, You have removed my sin and redeemed me from its eternal consequences.

Jesus, Thank you for living the perfect life I am unable to live, for suffering the punishment I deserve, and for the forever victory I have by trusting You and applying Your promises.

Spirit, Thank you for coming into my heart and giving me faith. Thank you for making it possible for me to love the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. On my own I can’t, I won’t … but with Your help, I do!

Thanks and praise forever!

I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.

Ephesians 1:16–17

Father, thank you for the people in my life. Those around my table and those who could not be here. Please be with us all. Give us wisdom, insight, and strength that we might glorify You with our lives. May we continue to hold each other up. May we encourage each other with Your love. May we be quick to forgive as You have forgiven us. And may we grow closer to You and to one another every day.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Father, this feels hard sometimes! Please help me see who You are in my life … as long as I have Jesus, I have everything I need. Your Word says that You will provide for the needs of those who SEEK You above all else. May I faithfully know and follow Your will for me. May I be filled with thanks knowing that whatever is going on my life, You will give me everything to endure through Your all-sufficient grace.

Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:17

Father, may my life glorify You. May everyone I meet know I love You. May I live each day as a sacrifice of gratitude for who You are and all You do. Thank you for my home, my family and friends. Thank you for food and clothing. Thank you for work and for the time to rest from work. Thank you for love and laughter, and music, and hope and the ways You fill my life with good things.

Thank you! May all I do be by Your grace and for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

5 Verses to Pray When You Doubt Your Faith

10 / 31 / 193 / 20 / 20
One of satan's favorite temptations beginning in the Garden of Eden is to get you to doubt your faith. So, we're praying the promises of God, thanking Him for His faithfulness even when we doubt. #Faith #Prayer #DoubtFaith #Blessings

I’ve recently come to the conclusion that the enemy has one primary form of tempting God’s children.

It’s the same thing he’s used since the Garden…

“Did God really say…”

Genesis 3:1a

He is all about tempting us to doubt.

Doubt God. Doubt the Bible. Doubt Jesus.

And if all else fails … he wants you to doubt your faith.

I recently received a prayer request from someone who was being taunted with a couple of faith-related questions.

  • What if my faith isn’t strong enough?
  • What if I lose my faith?

It’s easy to understand where the questions come from at a time when famous leaders are coming forward saying they no longer believe.

It’s confusing and satan loves to use things like the fall of the popular and influential to get us to question God’s Word and His love.

Growing up, my pastor would assure us that it was okay to doubt if…

And the IF is really important.

It’s okay to doubt your faith if doubting motivates you to turn to GOD and SEEK HIS TRUTH!

Everyone will doubt from time to time. When circumstances are difficult and fear looms, when people let us down and life disappoints, when we question and wonder and want and wait … satan uses those moments to taunt and discourage us—tempting us to doubt God’s love and our faith.

Which is why I’m going to the Word and prayer today. I’m asking God to assure us of His gift of faith, asking Him to remind us of His past presence and faithfulness, and asking Him to help us know the truth of His grace, mercy, and love even when we’re weak and worried. I’m asking Him to help us celebrate His blessings no matter how we feel or how the enemy tempts us.

I am making the prayers personal and I’m hoping you will pray with me…

5 Verses to Pray When You Doubt Your Faith

One of satan's favorite temptations beginning in the Garden of Eden is to get you to doubt your faith. So, we're praying the promises of God, thanking Him for His faithfulness even when we doubt. #Faith #Prayer #DoubtFaith #Blessings

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Father, Thank you! Your Word assures me that I’m not alone. Since the first temptation, satan has been taunting us with questions and doubts. He is not a respecter of persons or positions … every one of us is tempted from time to time.

But You, Lord God, are faithful. I am not alone. You are with me. Through the power of Your Spirit, You give me what I need to stand strong and endure in the midst of the battle and You give me what I need to bravely walk away.

When I can’t. You can. You will. You do. Your grace is sufficient and I am so very thankful!

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Philippians 1:6

Father, Thank you so much for making me Your own. This promise blesses, encourages, and gives me hope. Jesus is the source of my faith and hope. Thank you for Your Holy Spirit who continues to work within me … reminding me of Your love and giving me eyes to see the way You are at work in my life giving me everything I need.

When doubts arise, remind me that the enemy is the source of doubt but…

Jesus is the source of my faith and through the Spirit, He is the One who keeps me strong until that day when He returns to take me home. I have nothing to fear.

But in that coming day
no weapon turned against you will succeed.
You will silence every voice
    raised up to accuse you.
These benefits are enjoyed by
the servants of the Lord;
their vindication will come from me.
    I, the Lord, have spoken!

Isaiah 54:17

Father, with Your Spirit’s help, no weapon of doubt turned against me will succeed. You silence every voice that rises up to accuse of past sins that have already been forgiven. You silence every voice that tempts me to doubt You … to doubt my faith in You.

You have given me the gift of faith. I belong to You.

I humbly surrender this day to You in child-like faith. I will trust and follow Your will as You reveal it to me and I will live moment by moment secure in Your presence and protection.

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:15–16

Lord Jesus, Thank you! I am not alone. You know me inside and out. You understand our human nature and You know the temptations we face.

Thank you for showing me how to fight satan’s temptations with the Word, for showing me that we can stand with strength on Your Truth.

And thank you, thank you, thank you for making it possible for me to come to the Father in prayer and for promising that at His throne I will receive the grace and mercy I need.

When the enemy tempts me with doubt … Your grace, mercy, and love are my strength when I am weak, my courage when I’m afraid, my hope when I am lost, my possible when circumstances seem impossible, my source and sustainer of faith when questions arise.

You are Lord of lords and King of kings. I am so thankful for You!

“From eternity to eternity I am God.
No one can snatch anyone out of my hand.
No one can undo what I have done.”

Isaiah 43:!3

Father, Thank you! Thank you for giving me the gift of faith in Your Son, Jesus. My confession is not because of who I am … I am not strong enough or wise enough. My belief is not because of what I’ve done or because of the church I attend. It is fully based on Your grace, mercy, and love.

And You say, “No one can undo what You have done. No one can snatch me out of Your hand.”

I am Yours.

When I am tempted, fill me with Your Spirit. When I doubt, assure me of Your love. When I question, teach me Your truth. When life is hard and even when it’s not, help me SEEK First all You want for me one day at a time. Amen.

One of satan's favorite temptations beginning in the Garden of Eden is to get you to doubt your faith. So, we're praying the promises of God, thanking Him for His faithfulness even when we doubt. #Faith #Prayer #DoubtFaith #Blessings

When you doubt your faith…
When I doubt my faith…

The Good News is – we are not alone.

We are loved. We are understood. And by God’s grace and mercy, we can take it all, our questions, concerns, and doubts, to him in prayer and receive everything we need to live each day with hope and with the assurance of our faith.

5 Prayers that Thank God for the Gift of Life

9 / 19 / 197 / 29 / 20
We've been counting Bonus Days for 12 years when a life-changing event made us realize that every day is a gift of life and a reason to rejoice. #BonusDays #GiftofLife #Miracles #CountingMyBlessings #Livewithhope

September 20th, 2019 is Bonus Day 4,383.

How do I know? Because Rev writes the number on his calendar every single morning.

It is sometimes hard to believe it’s been 12 years since the miracle – since Bonus Day #1.

I have so many memories imprinted on my heart and mind … moments from days, weeks, and yes, months all leading up to September 20, 2007.

To name a few. There were:

  • Symptoms that looked like heart failure which continued to get worse all without a diagnosis or explanation.
  • Trips to doctors for tests and procedures we hoped would lead to cures and answers.
  • The times they had to drain liters of fluid off his lungs.
  • And family and friends who covered us in prayer as we waited for God’s peace and healing.

Finally, after almost a year … we learned that something called a Pericardial Stripping was the only way, short of a miracle, to save Rev’s life. However, it’s a surgery that most cardiac surgeons don’t want to do and one they were doubtful Rev’s body was strong enough to survive at the time. If you would like to read more of the story, you can find it here and here.

Most families celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.

In the Bible, God told His children to celebrate festivals. Days they were to rejoice and remember His deliverance and protection. His miraculous grace and mercy.

Days of praise and prayers.

So, today … I’m going to God with a festival of praise and I’d love for you to join me.

You may not have a specific life and death situation where you saw God’s miraculous intervention … but through Jesus, we have God’s divine protection in the greatest life and death situation of all. We have been offered an endless supply of Bonus Days and more reasons to thank and praise God than we can count. We have been forgiven and set free to celebrate forever … one day at a time.

So, let’s pray and thank God for the gift of life … today!

5 Prayers that Thank God for the Gift of Life

We've been counting Bonus Days for 12 years when a life-changing event made us realize that every day is a gift of life and a reason to rejoice. #BonusDays #GiftofLife #Miracles #CountingMyBlessings #Livewithhope

You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in Your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
How precious are Your thoughts about me, O God.
    They cannot be numbered!

Psalm 139:16–17

Father, how do I begin to thank you the way I should for the gift of life. Your Word says You knew me before I was born. You knew the plans You had for me and prepared a path for me long ago.

When I think of Your grace and mercy, the people You have brought into my life, the opportunities You’ve placed before me, the ways You pursued me with Your love … it fills me with humble gratitude and overwhelming awe. Thank you!

I am so thankful for the gift of every Bonus Day! There are no promised days in this life … so every one is a gift, a day to celebrate and serve. Please help me. Fill me Your Spirit and help me trust, follow, and obey Your will for me today.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.
This is the Lord’s doing,
and it is wonderful to see.
This is the day the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:1,23–24

Lord, You are so good! Your love is evident in the beauty of the world You created. It is realized in the gift of Jesus. And it is known in our hearts through the power of Your Spirit.

This day, today, is a gift from You! A Bonus Day to thank, praise, and serve You. A festival, a day to celebrate and rejoice in the simple gift of life. Whatever the day brings, may I live for Your glory. Thank you!

Let all that I am praise the Lord;
    with my whole heart,
I will praise His holy name.
Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things
He does for me.

Psalm 103:1–2

Father, I want to praise You with all I am. I love this reminder to never forget all the good things You have done for me … to remember to count my blessings.

It can be so easy to allow everything from little annoyances to big problems distract me from the countless good You pour into my life. Please forgive me.

Thank you for Your grace and mercy, for Your peace and protection, for the gift of family and friends, for hope and happiness, for love and forgiveness. Thank you for Jesus! Thank you for Bonus Days!

But then I recall all You have done, O Lord;
I remember Your wonderful deeds of long ago.
They are constantly in my thoughts.
    I cannot stop thinking about
Your mighty works.

Psalm 77:11–12

Father, thank you for the gift of Your Word. I love reading about all You have done from creation to the promise of Jesus and a future forever in Your presence.

Thank you for the gift of faith and the ways You work in my heart and mind to draw me closer to You and to the knowledge of the Truth.

Thank you for giving us days to celebrate! Days like birthdays and anniversaries … days of deliverance and protection.

Please give me eyes to see Your hand at work around me each day and a heart of thanks and praise for Your loving presence in my life.

Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.
Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord?
Who can ever praise Him enough?

Psalm 106:1–2

Lord, I thank you! You have been so good to me! You have shown me Your faithful forever love over and over again! Your miracles surround me. Please give me … eyes to see, a heart full of gratitude, and an attitude of praise!

This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad! Amen.

Friend, I pray you have many reasons to celebrate God’s gift of life today!

It’s so easy for us to get caught up in the routines and busyness of life that we forget today is not just another day … it’s a blessing to celebrate. It’s a reason to rejoice.

It’s a gift. It’s a miracle.

It’s a Bonus Day!

5 Prayers that will Strengthen You When You are Anxious and Afraid

8 / 8 / 197 / 29 / 20
There is a spiritual battle going on around us that can make us anxious and afraid but God is greater than our fear. He is able to give us His peace. #OvercomingFear #InnerPeace #FeelingAnxious #Prayer

Many of us have spent the week praying for hurting families in El Paso and Dayton while at the same time trying to get their heads around the unsettling feeling that the places we’ve always believed we were safe, may not be.

It’s understandable that some of us are feeling anxious and afraid. In the past week, news channels have recapped every terrifying event from recent history.

Friends, there is a spiritual battle going on. The enemy wants us focused on the evil side of the battle … crippled by anxiety and fear.

But the holy angelic warrior side of the battle is powerful and real. God is on the throne and His angel army fights for us.

I have held the following verse close this week…

“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!”

2 Kings 6:16–17

I’m fighting my anxious and afraid thoughts with the truth of God’s Word and prayer and I thought maybe you might be blessed by these prayers as well…

5 Prayers that will Strengthen You When You are Anxious and Afraid

There is a spiritual battle going on around us that can make us anxious and afraid but God is greater than our fear. He is able to give us His peace. #OvercomingFear #InnerPeace #FeelingAnxious #Prayer

Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world.

Ephesians 6:10–12

Father, I want to be strong in You … in the power You give. Please clothe me with the belt of truth, the shield of faith, and the shoes of peace. Please help me focus on the truth of Your Word when the enemy works to discourage me with anxiety and fear. Help me remember that You are with me; I am not fighting my battles alone.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!

Isaiah 26:3

Lord, You are my Shepherd … I have everything I need. I trust You to care for me today and eternally. Please keep my heart and mind focused on all You are doing in my life. When I am tempted to fixate on all that is wrong in the world. When I’m anxious and afraid. Please help me by the power of Your Spirit to trust Your sovereign grace and love and rest securely in Your perfect peace.

We can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:6,8

Father, I love these verses! They define faith! With Your Spirit’s help, I can say with confidence that You are always with me helping, guiding, providing, and protecting.

Your love is constant and never-changing. You proved Your love through Jesus life, death, and resurrection. By Your grace, I have nothing to fear.

Yet, sometimes fear still rises up in me. Please help me. When I am anxious and afraid, fill my heart and mind with Your promises and the truth that is unchanging and never fails.

I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me.

Psalm 16:8

Lord, When I am anxious and afraid, please help me remember the times You have helped me in the past. You lifted me out of the pit of fear and despair, placed me on solid ground, and steadied me as I walked along. (Psalm 40:2) I can trust You are with me today and always. Thank you!

Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt His name together. I prayed to the Lord, and He answered me. He freed me from all my fears.

Psalm 34:3–4

Father, I will praise You and lift You up. I will tell of the good things You have done for me. I lived afraid and anxious for so many years. I’ve trusted You for my eternal future for as long as I can remember but I struggled to trust You with my days … with my daily decisions, with my loved ones, with unknown circumstances and worldly terrors.

But because of Your grace and mercy, You carried me as I lived through one of my worst fears. You held me close as You met every need. I prayed and You answered me! And I will tell, all who will listen, of Your marvelous works … of Your greatness, Your grace, mercy, and love. Amen.

There is a spiritual battle going on around us that can make us anxious and afraid but God is greater than our fear. He is able to give us His peace. #OvercomingFear #InnerPeace #FeelingAnxious #Prayer

Friend, I’ve realized God is giving us an amazing opportunity!

When our anxious and afraid friends voice their concern…

We can tell them about God’s love. We can tell them that He is able to make us strong and give us peace.

Yes, there is a spiritual battle going on around us. Both good and evil are present in our fallen world. But God is greater! Jesus has already won the victory. And as God’s children … we are victorious, too.

5 Verses to Pray When You Want to Seek God First

6 / 13 / 197 / 29 / 20
I want to get up each morning and seek God first. I want to live surrendered and free in Jesus! But it takes prayer. So, I'm praying 5 verses asking for the Spirit's help. #Prayer #Faith #SeekGodFirst #Blessings #BlessingBloggers

SEEK was my word for 2018, and I chose Luke 12:31 as my verse…

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything you need.

At the end of the year, I knew there was no moving on. Seek went from being my word for the year to being my word for life!

I think the reason it’s so important to me is because giving God first place in my life was something I struggled with for much of my life. I believed and trusted in Jesus for my salvation but I also struggled to surrender myself completely.

Satan had planted a seed of doubt … one that told me much was asked of those who surrendered completely. So, I held back just a little because I doubted God’s ability to strengthen me through my “what if” fears.

But I was wrong!

Life is hard whether we’re surrendered or not. Bad things happen to the faith-filled and to those without faith. But by God’s grace, I’ve learned that God is greater than my circumstances, even when they are painful and unwanted!

The Lord provided everything I needed through a season of overwhelming events and proved He is able to give me everything I need whatever my situation. I can now say…

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

Romans 8:38

He gave me what I needed when I needed it! Never early. Never late. But right on time.

Now I cling to verses like…

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

And…

“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”

Psalm 46:1 and 2 Corinthians 12:9

I want to get up each morning and seek God first. I want to live surrendered and free in Jesus!

But it takes prayer. So, today I’m praying 5 verses asking for the Spirit’s help to…

Seek God First

I want to get up each morning and seek God first. I want to live surrendered and free in Jesus! But it takes prayer. So, I'm praying 5 verses asking for the Spirit's help. #Prayer #Faith #SeekGodFirst #Blessings #BlessingBloggers

Search for the Lord and for His strength; continually seek Him.

1 Chronicles 16:11

Father, Seeking is not a “sit back, wait and see” way of life. It’s spending time in Your Word, coming to You in prayer, and worshipping You in spirit and truth. Seeking is realizing I’m lost without You. It’s recognizing my need for Your mercy and grace. And it’s living a life of gratitude for Your gift of love … Jesus, the One who “came to seek and to save those who are lost” like me. Please help me continually seek You today!

Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:6

Father, I want to trust and obey Your will faithfully but I fall short. Please forgive me and help me. Your Word says repentance is more than just saying I’m sorry; it is intentionally wanting to change. It’s trusting Your Word as truth and obeying Your will. It’s being willing to accept Your help in stepping off the path I’m on to take the path You want for me. Please help me apply these truths to my life.

The Lord is good to those who depend on Him, to those who search for Him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.

Lamentations 3:25–26

Father, I hear You whisper, “be still and know … cease striving” but it’s hard Lord. My life feels like it’s spinning. Do this. Be there. Check this box. Finish that project. Run this errand. Help. Serve. Accomplish. I’m exhausted! I need You! I am stopping right now … stopping to surrender and breathe in Your goodness.

By Your grace, help me remember, I don’t have to do this alone. Your Spirit is with me to counsel and guide. Make me constantly aware of Your sweet presence as I depend on Your truth to guide me and give me strength.

Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Matthew 6:21

Father, I know when I have You, I have everything I need. But the world shouts at me. My schedule harasses me. Some days … life simply wears me out.

With the help of Your Spirit, turn my focus from the chaos and desires of the world to the treasure I have in You. Fill me with Your peace. Help me replace the noise of life with the simple sounds of worship and praise. Give me a passion for Your Word and prayer. Be my treasure and my heart’s desire. Satisfy me with Your love.

Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim His greatness. Let the whole world know what He has done. Search for the Lord and for His strength; continually seek Him. Remember the wonders He has performed, His miracles, and the rulings He has given,

Psalm 105:1,4–5

Father, Thank you! When I remember all You have done in the past, I’m overwhelmed by Your grace and mercy. You have sustained and strengthened, healed and helped, provided and protected. I am overwhelmed. Thank you!

I surrender this day to You. I will follow where You lead and obey Your will as You reveal it to me. I will seek You with all I am and love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Please fill me with Your Spirit that I might willingly and faithfully keep this promise … by Your grace and for Your glory.

I want to get up each morning and seek God first. I want to live surrendered and free in Jesus! But it takes prayer. So, I'm praying 5 verses asking for the Spirit's help. #Prayer #Faith #SeekGodFirst #Blessings #BlessingBloggers

Seek God First

Jesus promised…

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.

Luke 12:31

Everything! And the next verse…

So don’t be afraid … it gives your Father great happiness to give You the kingdom.

Luke 12:32

Great happiness! Wow! What a blessing it is to know our prayers to “seek God first,” are prayers our Father loves to answer!

Verses to Pray that will Help You Focus on the Positive

11 / 1 / 187 / 29 / 20

I'm taking the Philippians' Challenge but I need help. So, I'm asking God to help me focus on the positive ... on the victory He has already won. #Positive #Hope #BlessingCounter #Bible #Prayer #Pray #BlessingBloggers

On Monday, I invited you to take the Philippians’ Challenge:

  1. Take a fast from the news and from your Twitter feed until after the mid-term elections.
  2. Grab a journal and make a list of things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable each day.
  3. Invite your family to have good news conversations at dinner each night.
  4. Do one small act of kindness every day.
  5. Pray for our nation, our leaders, and for the upcoming election.

The challenge was to do these five things … just to see what happens!

So today, I want to ask you – how’s it going?

I have to be honest with you.

I was super inspired and ready to go! But truthfully, I thought it would be easier.

I’m generally a positive and optimistic person. I love to laugh. I try to see the good in people and to look for the good in most circumstances. But old habits are just that – they’re habits and it often takes time for new good habits to replace the old bad ones.

So, I’m going to the Lord and asking for help, I thought you might want to join me.

Verses to Pray that will Help You Focus on the Positive

I'm taking the Philippians' Challenge but I need help. So, I'm asking God to help me focus on the positive ... on the victory He has already won. #Positive #Hope #BlessingCounter #Bible #Prayer #Pray #BlessingBloggers

Romans 12:2

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Father, I surrender myself to Your transforming grace and mercy. I want to become more like Jesus. I want to love like Him. I want to trust and follow Your will … Your good, pleasing, and perfect will. Your plans for me are good and full of grace. Thank you for Your loving patience and for never giving up on me. I love you, Lord!

2 Corinthians 10:3–4

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.

Father, sometimes the battle is hard. The enemy knows my weaknesses and attacks me. He sees where You are transforming me and challenges my change. But God… Oh Father, thank you for those two words! But God … You have won the war for me. You give me all I need to fight my spiritual battles. I have Your Word of Truth and the presence of Your Holy Spirit. Thank you! With You, I can focus on the positive. With You, I am victorious! I am a conqueror! I am Yours!

Isaiah 26:3–4

You will keep in perfect peace
    all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on You!
Trust in the Lord always,
for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.

Father, when the world around me spins in chaos … with Your Spirit’s help, I will keep my thoughts fixed on You and focus on the positive things You have done for me. Thank you for allowing me to trust You. Thank you for being my Rock. I have a firm foundation. I will not be shaken. Thank you for giving me Your perfect peace. In and with You … it is well with my soul.

John 8:31–32

Jesus said to the people who believed in Him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Jesus, I want to be Your faithful disciple. I want to trust You completely and faithfully follow Your teachings. Please forgive me when I fail, and make it the desire of my heart to know and love You with all I am. By Your Spirit’s power, may I know Your freedom giving truth. The truth that frees me from guilt, fear, and anxiety … from sin, death, and Satan’s power. Your saving grace has made me free and with Your help, I will focus on the positive as I embrace each day in the joy of Your presence and promise of Your salvation.

I'm taking the Philippians' Challenge but I need help. So, I'm praying and asking God to help me focus on the positive ... on the victory He has already won. #Positive #Hope #BlessingCounter #Bible #Prayer #Pray #BlessingBloggers

And finally, the verse that inspired the challenge…
Philippians 4:8

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Father, help me! I believe Your Word of truth! I trust Your promises. By Your grace, help me focus my heart and mind on all that is excellent and worthy of praise. Help me think about things that please You. Please help me settle myself each day to spend time alone with You in Your Word and prayer. And with the help of Your Holy Spirit, no matter what is going on around me … give me all I need to remain focused on You. In Jesus name, Amen.

If you’ve decided to take the Philippians Challenge and focus on the positive, I’d love to hear how it’s going.

What is on your list of things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable? My list is full of people … of family and friends who lift up and encourage. My list includes God’s Word and prayer. It includes smiles and laughter, strength and courage, faith and hope, grace and truth … and LOVE!

Because when you and I focus on love – sins are covered and hearts are united. And that’s a beautiful truth we can focus on … when the enemy uses his resources to defeat and divide, you and I have all we need to remain united through the power of God’s love.

We have Jesus!

Thank you so much for joining me today.

7 Verses and Prayers that will Bless Your Marriage Adventure

3 / 8 / 1710 / 22 / 20

After 45 years of marriage - these marriage verses and prayers have blessed us. I pray that will bless your marriage adventure, too.

Rev and I will celebrate our 45th Anniversary this weekend.

What?!

I remember thinking people married 25 years were old and those married 50 were ancient. Now that we’re closer to 50 than 25 . . . I’m surprised at how not old we feel.

Sure, on the outside our hair is gray and our skin has a few wrinkles but on the inside . . . we’re still just a couple of kids who fell in love living our adventure.

Adventures are full of joys and challenges and ours has definitely had both. In joys, we celebrated with praise and in challenges, we turned to God in prayer.

What a blessing to have always been able to go to the Lord for help and direction. So often we’ve grabbed hold of each other and poured our hearts out in prayer.

Prayer…

I can’t imagine our marriage without it.

So, I’d like to share some of my favorite marriage verses with prayers God has used to bless us. I pray they will bless you, too.

After 45 years of marriage - these marriage verses and prayers have blessed us. I pray that will bless your marriage adventure, too.

7 Verses and Prayers that will Bless Your Marriage Adventure

Psalm 63:3

Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise You! Psalm 63:3

Father, You are love. Love You show us day after day, year after year, and generation after generation. Perfect love . . . in and through Jesus. Thank you for Your countless blessings. Thank you for our marriage. Thank you for our family. Thank you for love! Thank you for Your love. Amen.

Ephesians 5:21

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21

Father, forgive me. I can get so caught up with the word “submit” I fail to honor Your will for me. I’m selfish and I want things my way. It’s hard to yield myself to someone else. Honestly, it’s hard for me to surrender myself completely to You. But submission comes from reverence for Christ. It responds to Your love and all You’ve given. You want me to submit to You and to my spouse. Help me, Father. On my own, I can’t but with Your help, I can do all things, even love better than I am able. Thank you, Father. By Your grace and with Your help I will surrender myself today. Amen.

Mark 10:7–9

‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.” Mark 10:7–9

Father, It’s hard for parents to let their children go off and make a new family. It’s hard for two independent selfish people to become one. There are so many things in our lives trying to tear our marriages apart. Thank you for this Word that tells us how precious the “oneness of marriage” is to You. With Your help, may it always be precious to us. Help us set safe boundaries around our marriage, to remember we are a team and with Your help, we can stand united and strong. Thank you in Jesus. Amen.

After 45 years of marriage - these marriage verses and prayers have blessed us. I pray that will bless your marriage adventure, too.

1 Peter 4:8

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

Father, I need an outpouring of Your love that covers sins. You are faithful to forgive me, please help me to faithfully and quickly forgive my love. Please help me remember my failures and ask for forgiveness. Keep me from maximizing my dear one’s faults while I minimize my own. Make me generous with mercy that puts problems in the past and grace that fills the present and future with kindness and care. Amen.

Ephesians 4:2–3

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. Ephesians 4:2–3

Oh, Father, humble, gentle, and patient. I want that. I know I want to receive it and yes, I even want to give it but in the daily messiness of life . . . it’s just hard. Unite us by the power of Your Spirit. Help us see the best ways to work together united by love. Make us humble, gentle, and patient. Give our home the peace of Your presence. In Jesus name and with His help. Amen.

Joshua 1:9

“Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Father, give us strength and courage as we live through problems. It is so easy to become frightened and discouraged. We need You! Help us to stand strong and lift each other up when we are weak. We can get distracted by the things that divide and defeat us. Unite us to each other and draw us close to you. Help us feel Your presence, trust Your wisdom, and follow Your direction. In and through Jesus. Amen.

After 45 years of marriage - these marriage verses and prayers have blessed us. I pray that will bless your marriage adventure, too.Proverbs 3:5–6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5–6

Father, we want to love and trust You completely. It’s hard to admit how often we rely on our own understanding. The number of times we try to fix things our way then running to You when that way fails. Forgive us. Forgive me. We come to You for help. Father, we surrender this day to You and ask You to show us the path to take. With Your Spirit’s help, we will study Your Word and learn Your commands and by Your grace, we will trust that You will never take us where Your love cannot sustain us. Your grace is sufficient and Your mercy complete. Thank you. In Jesus name. Amen.

God is Faithful!

Like you, we’ve had joys and sorrows, easy fun days to celebrate and hard days when we could only drop to our knees in prayer.

Life’s an adventure. One I can’t imagine taking without God’s faithful love and mercy.

“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in Him!”  Lamentations 3:22–24

I’m so very thankful for our 45 years and I’m praying that by God’s grace we will enjoy the adventure for many more.

Finally, a quote from Tim Keller…

“In sharp contrast with our culture, the Bible teaches that the essence of marriage is a sacrificial commitment to the good of the other. That means that love is more fundamentally action than emotion.”
